I like old school metal stuff, I listen to tons of modern metal bands who play the "80's metal" sound, and I like Mercyful Fate, so it should be something I'd enjoy, especially coming from you. Unfortunately...based on the samples at their Myspace page, the vocalist sounds like King Diamond with all the talent and ability stripped away. King's vocals are an acquired taste to be sure, but unlike this clown at least HE can sing in key and in tune through an entire song, this guy is all over the map, and NOT in a good way. Music is better than the vocals, but it still sounds second, or even third rate compared to the Mercyful Fate guys, or for that matter, many more recent 80's inspired metal bands. The drums are mixed way too far forward and have a sound quality about on par with St Anger, and the guitars are buried way in the back, even if the playing was absolutely stellar it'd be hard to notice throughout most of the material. I realize they likely can't afford a top producer or nothing but even most uber-cult bands have the sense to not bury their guitarist and not have that banging on trash can drum sound. As far as Mercyful Fate influenced metal goes, I'll take the last Sacred Oath disc over this stuff by far. Hate to say it, but you let me down this time, I tend to trust your reviews and comments, and if you recommend something, 9/10 times I'll check it out, even if it's in a genre I don't normally follow(ie, death and black metal), but this time I can't agree with your assessment at all. I guess this time we're just hearing totally different things(and I even decided to explain why, rather than just use a short "this blows" response). Maybe when they can afford a producer(ANY producer) I'll give them another chance.
And quality level aside, I hate when bands do shit like this. I don't care if the entire Don't Break the Oath lineup actually got back together, had King singing like it was 1984, and got Satan himself to guest on it, I'm still not paying for no 2 track 7'' vinyl. I'm of the philosphy that you either put your music out on CD, or don't fucking put it out at all. It's 2007, and if you can record music, you can afford a goddamn MP3 program, a CD burner, and a packet of CDRs. Putting it out on vinyl is just reeks of posturing to show how "troo" and "underground" and "cult" they are, it's pathetic.
