Well, I had my problems, too with some questions (7/10), but we Swabians are not really Germans, are we...? And judging from your surname, you might have some Swabian ancestors, too, so that might explain things.

You're still welcome here.

I'm not sure about the Swabian ancestry, the last time my family lived in Europe they were in Austria, in an area that is now part of Germany (I think).

Makes sense to me. The region I live in has also been part of the Austro-German Empire at one point in time until after the Napoleonic wars, when the "Holy Roman Empire of German Nation" finally collapsed, it was governed by the Austrian dynasty "Habsburg". Ulm is my home city, on the Danube river, and if someone has the surname "Ulmer" here, it is likely that some of his ancestors have come from Ulm and moved to another place somewhen in the past, and the people in the new home consequently called them Ulmer(s). So if we have a guy called Markus moving from Ulm to Augsburg or Vienna in let's say 1668, people there might have referred to him as Markus (the) Ulmer.

My village is called Steinberg, while our neighbouring village is Staig. Consequently we have some families here with the surname "Staiger". Seems like they've moved three miles a couple of hundred years ago...

If you should be interested in the city of Ulm, here's a link with quite some info:

(They normally have an English site, too, but it seems down for reconstruction at the moment. Sorry.)
Here's a pdf with some quick info in English:

Thanks for the info Hugin! After some digging, it seems I was mistaken about the location - my grandfather was born in Gassendorf, Austria (which became Poland in 1919, and then the USSR in 1945), grandmother in Pabianice, Poland. I always lose track of where these are today. :)

Anyone tried Ulmer Beer?

Yes, of course. We have quite some breweries here in Ulm. Gold Ochsen, Ulmer Münster, Barfüßer, Kronenbräu... eh, yeah, I guess that's about it... and there are also some more, smaller ones in some villages in the region. Two villages away from my place, we have Adlerbräu Dellmensingen. Brewery founded in 1349 and owned by the same family ever since.

BTW... Very nice interview that you've done with my collegue Holger over at Powermetal.de. Great to hear you're always working on new material. We'll patiently wait...
;)

Attached a photo of "your" private brewery.
:D
