I was wondering if the new Snakepit is ever going to hit the states. I've been waiting and haven't heard anything lately.

Any place I can buy it from overseas? I don't mind paying shipping costs from Europe. I am dying to read it!

As far as I know, the new issue is on hold; as Laurent said, funds to print it have to be coughed up first.

So, what is the problem over there in the US?

Funding to get the mag out, as usual, I guess. Maybe Yosuke underestimated costs?
By the way, the last issue I have is the one with the Realm-interview. I didn't miss something that came after that, right?

That is #15 - yeah, that's the latest issue.

You know, the more I think about this and how much it sucks that we can't even get enough money from ads to sell this amazing mag, I propose a couple ideas. Why not try to come up with subscriptions and pre-orders and make it available in the U.S. on this basis? That way, Yosuke can determine how many copies he needs to print, and half the money will already be raised through the subscriptions and pre-order money. Or, what would be better as Laurent has said in the past, each person who buys the mag should pre-order 5 copies and sell them around to their friends. How hard can this be?! Come on people, let's see if we can get this thing off the ground! Pitch in with your comments....

As someone who works in the print industry, I have seen this problem many times before. It is very hard to secure advertising dollars until a publication is established as being able to publish with a reliable schedule, which makes it very hard to get things out on advertising alone. Subscriptions pose the same problem, as people are generally unwilling to pay in advance for something they might not get, or have to wait forever for - from personal experience, this was why I chose to hold off accepting funds for CD preorders until the pressing date was imminent. Also, people promising to pay and actually doing it when product is ready are not the same thing.

Even basing a print run on preorders gets tricky because the cost per issue is based on the total print run, and there can be substantial differences depending on how many copies get printed. This is a problem for any manufactured product.

One solution that could work would be to sell electronic versions of the magazine (PDF format). This would allow people to receive their copies around the world instantly (or close to), eliminate shipping and printing costs, and not require an up front investment, other than production time. You could have the option of also doing a printed version if sales support it, with an additional mailing charge for those who want hard copy. One other advantage of going electronic is that you can go full color throughout. You could also distribute through places like Amazon, albeit for a much smaller profit per issue sold.

The downside is that once the mag is electronic, it can be pirated, just like music is, but there are DRM (Digital Rights Management) solutions that can help with this, but I have not looked into what they cost. You also would have to work out how you'd do distribution - the simplest being just emailing the finished mag to whoever sends money.

I would add that I would be willing to assist in creating the PDF version if that is what you decide to do.

What can I say Jeff? What you wrote is exactly what's going on.... it's extremely hard nowadays to secure advertising when you are a very very very...; small publication.... that's the problem..... and even if we were bigger I wouldn't sell my soul to the advertisers.... the problem whe,n you're getting too big is that you depends of advertising which means that you can't criticize stuff.... even on our small basis it happened a few times that record labels didn't want to advertise cos they didn't like the reviews.... a circle...

doing it as a PDF thing could be a solution at this point... what do you think guys????

I agree with Temple. Any Snakepit is better than none. And if you want a paper copy you can print it out yourself from the pdf. Not a problem.
