Ed gehts besser, hier seine (etwas ausfĂĽhrliche) Message:
Hey All,
First off on behalf of all of the band and our organization we would like to thank of all of you for your royal treatment to the band and our associates this week at KIT. It was wonderful to finally meet so many of you in person and you are all such good friends. We are extremely happy and grateful for the opportunity to have played KIT…..
All of the bands that we had interaction with were awesome. The guys from Exumer and Restless were just awesome to hang with….
Basically all of the bands we interacted with were very nice….
The fans were amazing from Frank to Queen of the Reich to Florian to Rupuntzle the list just went on and on everyone being so cool...
One Sicilian Soldier's (Alexandra) story about Guilty as Charged was so moving I don't think any of us will ever get over it.
I also think I need to make some kind of statement about some of this weekend’s other events.
So many of you have sent messages of concern, and I just want to assure you all that I am ok. I am in bed and resting. We were not looking to make a big deal of this before the show and we had hoped to avoid the subject all together.
10 Days before KIT I woke up one morning experiencing the worst abdomen pain that I could ever had imagined. I spent approximately 17 hours in this state of pain that I can only describe as the worst thing I have ever felt in my life. I assumed it was something like a Kidney Stone. At about midnight of that night my wife convinced me to go to the emergency room. Long story short, after several hours of tests and a CAT Scan the Doctor informed me that my appendix was starting to rupture and I needed to have immediate surgery. A surgeon was on his way and I would be in surgery within 90 minutes.
My first reaction to the DR was that “he didn’t understand”. I needed to be on a plane to Germany in a week to play the concert I have been waiting to play for 25 years. He replied that if I didn’t have the surgery there wouldn’t be a next week. It was at this point I realized the seriousness of it all and that there was a good chance of having to cancel KIT. I never would want to do this and even if I had to go out in a wheelchair I would have. Playing KIT was important to me.
My surgeon was awesome. I explained the situation and although I did need to have the full-blown open surgery (as opposed to the laser style) he felt he could get me on that plane in a week. I spent the next week recovering an following all directions in order to get better both for KIT and in addition I have a pretty responsible job I needed to get back to. He did tell my wife that he couldn’t believe I hadn’t had problems before as my Appendix was one of the absolute worst he has ever seen.
On the Wednesday the surgeon removed all of the staples from the surgery and everything looked good to go. He gave me some instructions, which I followed. So he cleared me for the flight, as no wound infection was evident.
On Thursday upon arrival in Germany I did not feel so good. I went to the hotel and slept almost all day and continued taking the antibiotics etc…. We immediately were having an issue finding regular drinking water and ice. The Hotel only had Mineral Water and they didn’t seem to understand what we were looking for. I was supposed to drink a ton of fluids but in reality I drank very little and didn’t eat but once over the first couple of days.
On Friday Morning the day of the show I slipped coming out of the shower and it ripped the surgery wound completely open. Without going into to the gory details, it was clear to me that it was now infected. All day Friday I was in severe pain and had all kinds of surgery pads and everything on so the guitar wouldn’t hit the wound. I also didn’t want to take painkillers, as it would effect my playing. So I kind of just tried to get through it. I could barely move on stage and that is why I looked so “Stiff playing”. I went back to the hotel soon afterwards, as I needed to get back in bed.
On Saturday I knew something wasn’t right. I was dizzy and lightheaded and the infection was still raging. I got through most of the day but again didn’t eat or anything. Eventually my body had enough. The infection had built up in the surgery cavity and I needed to have an additional surgical procedure to pump the abscess in my appendix area. I remember sitting on the stairs at KIT and then waking up in the operating recovery room.
The people at the German Hospital were excellent to me and to the guys who were all concerned. They got me out of there by 1 AM and we were on a plane home a couple of hours later. I went to the surgeon here yesterday and he had upped my antibiotics and hopefully by next Monday everything will be cool and I can go back to work.
While I am very sore, I feel given a few more days I will be much stronger. The entire thing was I did way too much way too soon. I knew if we cancelled KIT that there would be a lot of people mad at us and a lot of people would have lost money. I also wanted to do this because you never know if you will get a second chance…..
Thanks to all of our fans, the bands and the people who made KIT 12 such a class Act. From the friendly security people, to the vendors, to the technicians, to Oli and Tarek themselves everyone was AWESOME….
Thanks to all of you….
I know we spoke with several promoters this weekend and we are very interested in all of your projects. Please allow me a week to recover and we will catch-up with each of you….
Special thanks to Kerstin and Andy for their help in translating to the EMTs (amongst other things) what was going on. Also thanks to those at Kreiskrankenhaus Tauberbischofsheim. They were world class in helping me….
Thanks
