Fortunately normally modern bands have no chance in Heavy soundcheck....so i guess the chances for Top 5 seem to be not too bad...

In the POWERMETAL.de-Soundcheck it would have a good chance for a top5 as well, as 5 of 8 of the editors are here at SMB as well. ;) RAM was #2, PRAYING MANTIS #4in June.

Well, it took those picky Texans of Ancient Cross a while to record a full-length, but it has been worth the wait. Simply entitled 'Ancient Cross' and sporting a fine cover painting by Alan Lathwell, the debut album holds eight tracks of undiluted US-power metal. No modern influences whatsoever here, but concise songwriting and pure craftsmanship all the way through, with passionate guitar work and raw yet melodic enough vocals from Michael Lance. Stand-out numbers for me are the dramatic 'Candle fades', 'The hourglass' and 'In dreams' (fantastic melody lines!) plus the closing epic 'Forsaken'.

The Ancient Cross disc is getting around, I see - and it's well deserved, too. It's so easy to get into, yet still has enough heaviness, substance and detail to excite and remain an album that, instead of gathering dust on the shelf after the initial 20 or so spins, will continue to shine for the next few years. One of my faves from the Stormspell catalogue.
